How to wear a Maxi Dress if you are petite

Unlike some of our friends who are blessed with naturally long legs who have no problems with wearing long pants and long dresses (heehee..), I've never dared to even look at maxi dresses when I go shopping but recently I realised that choosing the right maxi dress can make me look 'longer' instead!

Contrary to popular belief, a short girl CAN wear a long dress. Nicole Richie is a testament to that.

Petite celebrities Eva Longoria, Nicole Richie and Hilary Duff in maxi dresses:

Here are some tips:

#1
Go solid or monochromatic. Maxis with solid colors, especially darker ones, will definitely make a short person appear taller for the simple reason that it is slimming (thus elongating) and it offers less distraction to the eyes.

If you’re a plus size petite, dark solid colors are a must. But if you’re small and petite like Nicole Richie, then you can afford to wear light solid colors .

If you want to wear a color block maxi dress, make sure it’s monochromatic, otherwise, try to choose maxi dresses with block orientations that will not cut you in half.

#2
It’s pretty unavoidable to wear printed maxi dresses because they are quite abundant. Make sure you pick prints that are proportionate to your size. If you’re thin and short, pick maxi dresses that have small prints. Using a dress with large prints will overwhelm your tiny frame.

C. Lilly Floral Maxi Dress in yellow, also available in pink and blue.

#3
Pick the right cut. Generally, for petite women, maxi dresses that are cut closer to the body work best. Dresses made out of soft and fluid jersey or silk fabrics cut on the bias are the most ideal because the fall and drape of these fabrics will skim your body. Avoid boxy, balloon, or tent like dresses that come in stiff materials.

C. Tara Maxi Dress

Pick maxis that accentuate the waist (whether it be the empire waist or your true waist). Empire cut maxi dresses with soft flowy skirts work best in hiding tummy bulges and giving the illusion of longer legs (more height). Or, add a skinny belt!

#4
Wear the right shoes. With the maxi dress already covering majority of your body, it's best to keep the feet open. The best footwear to go with a maxi dress is a pair of strappy sandals, flat or heeled. If you want to wear flat ones, go with thong sandals.

Now, tell me you're dying to buy a maxi dress because I did!

Have a lovely week ahead!

Xoxo,
Min

Fashion + Wedding

I know for sure most of us girls, attached or not, have definitely at some point of our lives thought of how we want our wedding to be and what gown we would wear on our big day. I came across this video of supermodel Coco Rocha's wedding in France and I MUST share with you how fabulous her wedding was.

Everything was so gorgeous from start to end - the venue (how can you not feel romantic knowing you're in France?!), the settings, her Zac Posen gown, the flowers, candles and fireworks for cake-cutting!

Don't you agree those scenes where she posed in her lovely gown looked like an editorial from Vogue?

A little trivial from Wikipedia: Coco Rocha is one of the few models who has spoken out against the prevalence of eating disorders in the modeling industry. She apparently got obsessed with food and gained 10pounds after a trip to Singapore. When she went back, people from the industry asked to lose more weight. They advised her "The look this year is anorexia. We don't want you to be anorexic but that's what we want you to look like."

Something for the weekend?

Hello! The weekend is finally here! What will you be wearing to your girly get-togethers, movie date or parties?

This week's suggestion: a high-waist skirt.

For a simple date, a light and flouncy (yes, somewhat poofy and airy) waisted skirt that spells fun and feminine, paired with a simple tank, flats, a small sling bag and you're good to go!

Jessica Alba; Alexa Chung; Sienna Miller; C. Flouncy Polka Dot Skirt in Peach Pink

Going to a party? How bout a printed mini paired with a racer back tank, sky high heels, your favourite party bag and lots of bangles layered together!

Diana Kruger; Rachel Bilson, C. Motif Printed Skirt

And the best part about these skirts is that with a change of accessories, you can turn them into work clothes!

Have a lovely weekend!

xoxo

Going Nude

A hot fashion trend we’ve been seeing everywhere in 2010 is the nude color. The nude trend is all about wearing light pinks, beige and caramel colors, not about wearing your flesh-color. This minimalistic trend is natural, bare and yet very chic at the same time.

If you think nude is only popular last season (spring/summer'10), we think nude is going to stay. For this fall, Alberta Ferretti, Sonia Rykiel, Aquascrutum and Victoria Beckham all incorporated a nude maxi dress look into their collections.

Victoria Beckham A/W'10

The recent David Jones launch in Sydney featured a line up of models spotting the nude trend.

Is the nude fashion trend for 2010 something you’ve embraced this season? Do you own any nude colored pieces? If you haven't, the C. Mesh Cowl-Front Top in nude could be your first piece at rocking this trend. 2 ways to wear this - pair with a pair of skinnies for a casual and chic look; or pair with a high-waist bottom as work wear.

The Maxi Dress

Looking for something informal, chic, suitable for the summer weather and at the same time not too casual? A maxi dress could be your answer!

While many of the long dresses have been deemed to be “bohemian” but this is not always the case. Maxi dresses can be styled according to your personality, as some of the basic solid styles are canvases open to interpretation with accessories. Try accentuating your waist with a braided leather belt or slip on some bangles. For dresses that incorporate a pattern such as paisley, tie-dye or floral, accessories should be kept minimum. Perhaps you can try pairing with a pair of simple and chic sandals.

The basic solid style:

Vanessa Hudgens; C. Distressed Maxi Dress

Patterned style:

Alessandra Ambrosio; Kate Walsh; C. Lilly Floral Maxi Dress

In my opinion, maxi dresses and floppy straw hats make a perfect summer vacation outfit. Have you decided what you'll be wearing to your next beach vacation? ;)
