How to wear a Maxi Dress if you are petite

Unlike some of our friends who are blessed with naturally long legs who have no problems with wearing long pants and long dresses (heehee..), I've never dared to even look at maxi dresses when I go shopping but recently I realised that choosing the right maxi dress can make me look 'longer' instead!

Contrary to popular belief, a short girl CAN wear a long dress. Nicole Richie is a testament to that.

Here are some tips:

#1
Go solid or monochromatic. Maxis with solid colors, especially darker ones, will definitely make a short person appear taller for the simple reason that it is slimming (thus elongating) and it offers less distraction to the eyes.

If you’re a plus size petite, dark solid colors are a must. But if you’re small and petite like Nicole Richie, then you can afford to wear light solid colors .

If you want to wear a color block maxi dress, make sure it’s monochromatic, otherwise, try to choose maxi dresses with block orientations that will not cut you in half.

#2
It’s pretty unavoidable to wear printed maxi dresses because they are quite abundant. Make sure you pick prints that are proportionate to your size. If you’re thin and short, pick maxi dresses that have small prints. Using a dress with large prints will overwhelm your tiny frame.

#3
Pick the right cut. Generally, for petite women, maxi dresses that are cut closer to the body work best. Dresses made out of soft and fluid jersey or silk fabrics cut on the bias are the most ideal because the fall and drape of these fabrics will skim your body. Avoid boxy, balloon, or tent like dresses that come in stiff materials.

Pick maxis that accentuate the waist (whether it be the empire waist or your true waist). Empire cut maxi dresses with soft flowy skirts work best in hiding tummy bulges and giving the illusion of longer legs (more height). Or, add a skinny belt!

#4
Wear the right shoes. With the maxi dress already covering majority of your body, it's best to keep the feet open. The best footwear to go with a maxi dress is a pair of strappy sandals, flat or heeled. If you want to wear flat ones, go with thong sandals.

Now, tell me you're dying to buy a maxi dress because I did!

Have a lovely week ahead!

  2. I am petite and I've recently discovered maxi dresses as my number one spring/summer outfit! I Absolutely love them. I'm only 5'1, slim with curves and these dresses always make me look longer and leaner. I hate that petite girls feel they can't wear a maxi dress because their drawing in them- just shop in petites, shorten/hem a maxi if needed, and follow these rules! Their so worth it- extremely comfortable and flattering!

  4. Thank you for spreading the word that petite women CAN wear maxi dresses! We worked with a designer to customize maxi dresses specifically for a petite frame, and I'm happy to say we followed your rules :) - two beautiful solid colors (not too light), accentuated at the high waist with a tie, with a gorgeous drapey material in the skirt. Over here at The Petite Shop, we will not be wearing pants until at least September ;).
